Our Farm
Dancing Goats Dairy & Apothecary is a small goat farm on unceded Wabanaki & Pawtucket Land (North Shore of Massachusetts). Our herd is rotated seasonally on open pastures and woodlots, helping us to regenerate the soil and co-exist harmoniously with the land we share.
Our farm’s ethos revolves around contributing to our local community, creating quality products with a focus on reviving artisanal methods, and raising our animals in a way that is compassionate and gentle on the environment.
Our Story
Our story, at it’s core, is an expression of creativity for our owner and founder Erin Bligh (they/them). For as long as Erin can remember, their life’s focus has been on creation, exploration, and the desire to share their passions with others in their community.
In 2010, combined interests in handcrafted artisanal foods, food justice, and animal welfare lead Erin to train in the art of cheesemaking with the hope of being able to eventually create a farm that embodied the hopes they had for a future where food systems were more equitable, less impactful on the environment, and focused on bringing their community together around a common table.
In 2012, the farm settled on it’s first property, just a short ride down the road from Erin’s family home, where they started growing their milking herd, selling artisanal apothecary products, and developing the farm’s first cheese recipes. In 2013, after renovating an old farm outbuilding into stalls and a milk room, we began our kidding season with a herd of five goats. Over the next two years, the farm would grow to a milking herd of thirty five.
In 2015, we began selling our cheese commercially, operating a small farm stand and selling our products in local stores and farmers markets. Our farm and cheese offerings began to expand and refine, gaining us wonderful press and a passionate local following. In 2017, we even took home a medal for our Marinated Chèvre at the national American Cheese Society judging.
In 2018, we relocated our cheesemaking operations to a neighboring farm a few towns away as we began collaborating with a local sheep farm who shared our passion for regenerative agriculture.
In 2020, our herd finally found it’s permanent home on a wonderful property with a long history of farming. With this new home has come a renewed focus on adapting our business and our herd to work with the land and what is has to offer rather than trying to coax it to suit our needs. With this has come a shift in focus from cheesemaking to a more holistic approach at creating a diversified farm. We look forward to sharing our mission to honor the wisdom and abundance of this land and to foster a sense of connection to it within our community for years to come.
